So You Want to Track Your Bike

Bikes disappear. A lot. Lock it up, walk away for ten minutes, come back to an empty rack — it happens to folks who casually lean their bikes outside and to those who invest in good locks. So the question comes up constantly: can I just slap a tracker on this thing and get it back if it's gone?

Short answer: yes, kinda, with an asterisk the size of your top tube. Here's the actual breakdown.

"GPS tracker" is not really what you want

I hear lots of people say they want a "GPS Tracker". I'm not sure there are true GPS trackers that make sense on a bike. Stick with me here, because this trips up almost everyone.

A real GPS tracker needs three parts: the GPS chip itself (to figure out where it is), a cellular radio (to tell you where it is), and a battery big enough to run both for days or weeks. That combo is a fine no-brainer in a car — hide it under a seat, wire it into the vehicle's own power if you're fancy, done. On a bike? Now you're looking at a chonky little box, usually with its own SIM card and subscription fee, that's a lot harder to hide and a lot easier for a thief to just... peel off and toss.

But location trackers like AirTags are a completely different animal. They use low-power Bluetooth (BLE) to just announce "hey, I'm here" to a universe of nearby phones. That's why a coin-cell battery lasts over a year instead of needing a charge every week or less  — the AirTag isn't doing any of the GPS or cellular heavy lifting itself. It's borrowing whatever iPhone happens to walk by.

The real standalone GPS options (if you actually want one)

If you do want true independent GPS + cellular tracking — no relying on a stranger's phone — there are small units built for exactly this. Worth knowing they exist even if they're not my first recommendation for most riders. I included a list of those I could find at the bottom here. (But I haven't tried any of them)

The catch with all of these: subscription fees, and size/weight that's still noticeably more than a coin-cell tag. They work. They're just a different tool for a different job (long-term recovery, works with zero nearby phones) than what most cyclists actually need.

The Bluetooth (AirTag-style) crowd, explained

This is really what most people mean when they are looking for a tracker. So, lets start with the downsides of the AirTag-style (BLE trackers) approach:

a) They need a compatible phone nearby to be found. Apple's Find My network is genuinely huge — hundreds of millions of iPhones quietly relaying location data. Android's equivalent (Google's Find My Device network) has matured a lot but is still catching up in coverage, especially outside dense urban areas.

b) They're designed to rat themselves out. To stop stalking, both Apple and Android trackers eventually alert a nearby phone that "hey, an unknown tracker has been traveling with you." For AirTags, confirmed timing: the alert fires at a random point between 8 and 24 hours after the tag is separated from its owner (this used to be as long as three days before Apple tightened it up). Once that phone owner gets the notification, they can trigger the speaker to help find and, yeah, probably destroy the tag. People do modify AirTags to disconnect the speaker (more on that below) which buys you time on step two, but doesn't stop the notification itself.

Net net: BLE trackers are cheap, tiny, and legitimately worth having as part of your strategy. They're great for finding a bike in the first hour or so after it walks off. Beyond that, you're relying on luck and however long it takes the thief's phone to snitch on them.

Android-friendly options, and what they can actually do

AirTag is iPhone-only, full stop — no meaningful support for Android finding. If you're on Android, here's what's real in 2026 (I haven't used any of these in years but all are legit):

  • Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2 — $29.99. Best pick if you (or your thief, ironically) are in a Samsung-heavy area, since it rides Samsung's own SmartThings Find network. Requires a Galaxy phone to set up. Not cross-platform at all — if your household mixes iPhone and Android, this tag is basically only findable by Samsung people.
  • Tile — Tile Mate runs about $25, no subscription required for basic finding (Smart Alerts and location history are gated behind a ~$3/month plan). The actual cross-platform option, works on both iPhone and Android. Downside: Tile's own network (plus some Amazon Sidewalk relay) is meaningfully smaller than Apple's or Samsung's, so in practice it updates less often in the wild.
  • Chipolo ONE Point — around $28, no subscription. A nice trick: this version taps into Google's actual Find My Device network (the same one Android uses natively), rather than running their own small private network like Tile does. That's a real edge for Android users.
  • Pebblebee Clip 5 — around $35, no subscription. Similar idea, can be set to join either Apple's or Google's network depending on setup.

Bottom line for Android riders: skip anything running its own tiny proprietary network. You want something plugged into Google's Find My Device network specifically — Chipolo ONE Point or a Pebblebee that supports it — if raw findability is the priority.

About that AirTag speaker delete

Because the anti-stalking chime is exactly what gets your hidden tracker found and smashed, a whole cottage industry popped up around physically disconnecting the AirTag's speaker. It's a real hardware mod — pop the case, snip or lift the speaker connection — and there are plenty of guides floating around showing how.

Worth knowing before you go down that road: this is the same trick that's been used maliciously for stalking, which is exactly why it's controversial and why some sellers who used to list "silent AirTags" pulled their listings after backlash. Apple has reportedly worked to make the speaker harder to remove on newer AirTag hardware specifically because of this. Legally and ethically, tracking your own stolen property is one thing; the mod exists in a genuinely uncomfortable neighborhood. Your call, but go in with eyes open.

Where people actually hide these things

If you're going the BLE-tag route (which, again, I'd lean toward for most riders), hiding it well matters more than the tracker itself. A thief who spots it in five seconds just flicks it into a storm drain. Common spots:

  • Under the stem cap — pop the top cap off, there's often just enough room for a tag before you re-torque the bolt. Purpose-made stem-cap mounts exist now specifically for this.
  • Inside a water bottle cage mount — some cages now come with a hidden compartment built right into the mounting base, tag rides invisibly behind the bottle.
  • Inside a saddle bag — the most obvious spot and honestly still a decent one, since saddle bags already look like normal gear, not a hiding spot.

None of these are bulletproof — a determined thief who's specifically hunting for a tag will check all three. But casual opportunistic theft (most bike theft) isn't that determined. Hidden and boring beats visible and fancy every time.

The part nobody tells you: police often can't do much with the location

Here's the deflating bit. Knowing exactly where your bike is doesn't mean you're getting it back. There's a growing pile of stories of people pinpointing their stolen bike (or car, or motorcycle) down to a specific address and still hitting a wall with police.

The official explanation, when you dig into it, usually comes down to insufficient evidence for a warrant — a location ping alone, they'll say, doesn't prove the bike (versus just the tag) is actually inside that specific address, so they need more before a judge signs off. As a non-lawyer, that sounds a lot more like "I don't want to waste my time" excuse by law enforcement than an actual legal wall, but perhaps a lawyer can chime in the comments. 

To be fair, it's not universal — there are plenty of counter-examples where a tracker ping plus a same-day warrant led straight to a full stash of recovered bikes. It seems to come down entirely to which department, which officer, and how busy the property crimes unit is that week. 

Or, more importantly, you may have the opportunity to retrieve it yourself, particularly in the initial time after the theft when it is nearby. 

Bottom line: a tracker is evidence-gathering, not a guarantee of a happy ending. Get the location, call it in, don't go full vigilante — but go in with realistic expectations about what "we know exactly where it is" actually gets you.

Could "Share Item Location" change this?

There's a relatively new Find My feature worth flagging: Share Item Location, which rolled out in iOS 18.2. Instead of you having to eyeball the map yourself and relay coordinates over the phone, you generate a secure link straight from the Find My app and hand it to a third party — Apple's pitch was mainly airlines for lost luggage, but the mechanism works for anyone you send the link to. It updates live, doesn't require the recipient to have an Apple device, and auto-expires after 7 days or as soon as you're reunited with the item.

In theory, this is exactly the kind of thing that could smooth over the friction in that last section — instead of a frustrated cyclist trying to describe a moving dot to a dispatcher over the phone, you just text an officer a live-updating link. I went looking for a documented case of it being used that way specifically with police and came up empty — it's a young feature and most of the recovery stories out there predate it or don't mention which sharing method was used. But the capability is there now, and it's worth trying if you're ever in that situation: it can only make handing off a location easier, not harder.

Android has the same tool. Google's Find Hub (formerly Find My Device) added its own Share Item Location feature — same idea, same 7-day auto-expiring link, works for any tracker tag on the Find Hub network (Chipolo, Pebblebee, etc.), and the recipient doesn't need a Google account to view it either. So whichever ecosystem your tag lives in, you've now got a legit way to hand a cop a live link instead of squinting at your own phone and trying to read coordinates over a counter.

So, what should you actually do?

Get a BLE tag (AirTag if you're iPhone, choose what's best for you on Android), hide it well, and treat it as one layer in a stack that starts with leaving your bike in smart places and a good lock. It won't guarantee your bike back. But for the cost of a $30 tag, it buys you a real shot in that first critical hour — and sometimes, if you're lucky, a lot longer than that.


A few GPS Trackers to look at

  • Invoxia Cellular GPS Tracker — ~$130 with a year (or two) of service included, then $39.90/yr (~$3.33/mo) after that. 30g, rechargeable, mixes low-power GPS outdoors with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth positioning indoors. Probably the slimmest of the true cellular trackers, small enough to actually hide in a saddle bag.
  • Tracki Mini GPS Tracker — the device itself is cheap, around $14–23, but that's the catch: it needs a monthly plan, anywhere from ~$4/mo (prepaid long-term) to ~$20/mo (month-to-month) for live updates. Tiny footprint, fits in narrow saddle bags or handlebar pouches, real-time movement alerts.
  • LandAirSea 54 — device runs $30–40, plus a subscription starting at $19.95/mo. Magnetic mount, genuinely waterproof, built more for "stick it under a car" but people jam it into frame bags too.
  • Monimoto 9 — around $179 for the hardware, then about $49/yr after an initial trial period. Embedded eSIM, key-fob arm/disarm, instant phone call on unauthorized movement. Aimed more at motorcycles but scales down fine.

Worth noting: only Invoxia and Monimoto keep the subscription cheap long-term. Tracki and LandAirSea are the classic "cheap box, pricey plan" model — do the math on a year or two before you buy on sticker price alone.

New electronic gravel groupsets: Wheeltop GeX and LTWOO eGR

So, there has been a fair amount of chatter in the last year+ about the new electronic shifting gravel groupsets from China.  LTWOO got to market first with the eGR and you can read my writeup of installing that here . But more recently Wheeltop came out with their equivalent GeX system ( Installation writeup here ). Initial pricing on both was almost too good to pass up as an experiment and I did so. L-TWOO eGR - Installation and use

So do scan through the updates below Background I was interested in the LTWOO eGR groupset to use on my 2019 Salsa Cutthroat . It was running SRAM Force 1 HRD (Mechanical shifting, hydraulic brakes) with a Garbaruk 10-50 cassette and their cage extender to allow for that range on Force.  The setup worked, but I never had the reliable, crisp shifting I would have liked.
